Maurice Storck of South Portland is Maine’s leading authority on coins and a well known national figure. A coin broker since age 10, he owns a Portland shop and has spent decades collecting and trading coins. He recalls paying $18 for an 1856 Flying Eagle penny which today would be worth about $3,000. Storck attributes rising values to more collectors and coins becoming investments, even by insurers. He travels across the eastern states and abroad to buy and sell coins, logging about 72,000 miles a year in his search for desirable pieces.
