St Francis College Biddeford officials seek bids for a 16 500 square foot library and an 18 607 square foot dormitory with 55 double rooms and one student lounge plus conversion of three existing dormitories to raise capacity by 34 students. Architect is Brother Cajetan Baumann. Bids open December 10.
Gerard R Moreau 45 of 159 Cleaves St Biddeford announced his bid for a Ward 2 seat on the Biddeford City Council as part of the Democratic Bernard G Neveux slate. He runs Quality Used Cars Co at 159 Cleaves St and has been a foreman at West Point Pepperell Co. He and his wife Eva Ledoux have two children, Robert and Cile, with grandchildren. He lists church and service memberships. Continued on Pace Three.
The season's first snowstorm swept Maine with eight inches in Greeny near Moosehead Lake and four inches in Augusta, three in Rumford. Northern areas may receive four to five more inches. Deer hunters welcomed the snowfall while parts of New England faced heavy warnings, high winds, and coastal flooding risks. Power lines failed in Ludlow, Vermont, and ski areas reported six inches as crews prepare for continued storm activity.
President Nguyen Van Thieu urged that South Vietnam replace the United States as lead negotiator at the Paris talks, potentially including the Viet Cong front. He proposed a one-delegation format with the United States and allies on his side, while Hanoi would direct the other. Thieu denied agreeing to four-party talks and stressed direct, sincere negotiations with Saigon.
Pioneer 9 launched with a Delta rocket and joined Pioneer 6 7 and 8 in solar orbit to form a four probe network for warning of solar radiation storms that could affect a Moon mission. A 40 pound satellite served as a practice target for the tracking net as Pioneer 9 settles into an elliptical solar orbit 70 to 93 million miles from the sun, completing each circuit in 298 days.
Bruce Reynolds, long sought ringleader of Britain’s Great Train Robbery, was arrested in Torquay on Aug 8 1963 currency heist connections. Police said Reynolds aided the 7 million raid and has been at large since, with Ronald Biggs still free. Reynolds faces London questioning as authorities pursue remaining suspects.
Kennebunk and Kennebunkport schools were ordered closed after Superintendent John S Seekins received multiple threats of school destruction. The warnings followed an arson attempt at Kennebunk Junior High School the prior Sunday, when flammable liquid was poured on a rear door and ignited but caused little damage. Seekins said a call at about 1 am Thursday warned that all schools would be destroyed within 36 hours.
Two Democratic candidates announce bids for at large council seats in Biddeford with Michael Nanos of Pool Street and Philip Gadbois of Cote Circle entering the race. Nanos is a Biddeford native, longtime Little League figure, chamber member, and Butler’s Department Store assistant.
