Independent candidate Samuel Zaitlin captured a clear mandate as Saco voters chose him over Democrat James Ward III and Independent James Wilkinson. He will become the city’s youngest mayor on December 1, with Republican Berton Braley conceding and backing the win. Zaitlin praised a grassroots campaign, strong organization, and a desire for harmonious governance with City Administrator John Dexter.
Elsie Searls of Wells felt constant arthritis pain until she sought deliverance at the Bethel Full Gospel Assembly on Route 1. After an altar prayer in March she reports complete relief with no symptoms since, while minister Daisy Leavitt notes many healings through faith and prayer. Her doctor had limited options, but the church emphasizes deliverance from illness through faith over reliance on medicine.
Biddeford and Saco Bus Lines requests a fare rise from 30 to 40 cents per zone, effective December 1, from the Public Utilities Commission. Company president Richard C Stride says the move is a stopgap as the line’s economic condition deteriorates. PUC officials note community notices and potential hearings depend on public reaction. Stride proposed alternatives include peak operation only, service abandonment, or seasonal operation, noting out-of-pocket costs are 115 percent of revenue and the company remains unsubsidized.
Saco voters elect Independent Zaitlin Saco as mayor with a sweeping victory across all seven wards. In City Council races two Republicans and four Democrats join him, with a Ward 3 tie for one seat and potential run off under review. Zaitlin led with 2,130 votes while Democrat James Ward III had 1,437, and Independent James Wilkinson 475. Ward 3 school board results boosted Democrats Fisher Milne and Chisholm alongside Chairman Carignan, Cot sis, and Jamieson. Milne led with 1,908 votes. Ward 3 council race saw Democratic incumbent Psomiades tied with Republican Foss at 216 each. independents Letendre and Gaines trailed. Ward 4 saw Pendleton ahead of Cyr by 12 votes after 337 to 325 counts. In other councils, Cassette defeated Kabel 434 to 230. Hjort beat Carter 280 to ?, with Ward 5, 6, 7 unopposed LeBlanc 385, Hobbins 452, Boucouvalas 409. If Ward 3 finalizes, at least six new councilors will take office December first. Zaitlin credited issue-driven campaigning and outreach to independents and Republicans alike.
Thomas Murphy a Kennebunk High history teacher won 441 votes to Peter Burr 398 and Eleanor Dunham 379 in Tuesdays three way special election. Murphy promised to revive the Growth Committee and to learn workers concerns by working half days. He will serve until March 1977 and resign from the planning board where he has served three years. turnout was 1,281 of 4,000 registered. 37 spoiled ballots and 18 blanks.
Vice President Nelson A Rockefeller, tied by Republicans to a possible Ford running mate role, announced a news conference for Thursday in the Executive Office Building at 10 a.m. Eastern. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said he has had no talks about leaving the post.
Lynn Fromme was denied permission to switch from innocent to no contest on the eve of her trial for the attempt on President Ford. Judge MacBride ruled she must represent herself with standby counsel, after she fired her court appointed attorney. She spoke of jurors as judgmental and then attempted to change her plea to nolo contendere, a move witnessed by reporters and tied to the 1965 presidential attempt statute.
