State Expected To Rest Murder Case

The state was expected to rest its case this afternoon on the 15th day of the murder trial of Joseph R. Mac Donald in York County Superior Court. MacDonald, 32, of Rochester, N H, is charged with fatally shooting State Trooper Charles C. Black during the July 9 bank robbery at the South Berwick branch of the First National Bank of Biddeford. Wayne E. Beckus, 27, of Masontown, Pa., an alleged accomplice, was convicted of murder Oct. 10 and awaits a life sentence. The defense cross examined Lt. Emery R. Jordan about the murder weapon and photos. testimony on a 1949 Buick getaway car was completed. MacDonald appeared tired. whether he will take the stand remains up to him. His former employer noted he disappeared the morning of July 9.

Allied Department Adds Distaff Jobs at Saco Plant

Allied Chemical Co. in Saco set up a new department hiring women to operate vulcanizing machines for a tennis shoe line. Raymond Bonang, personnel manager, said 100 women will be employed across two shifts without affecting men's vulcanizing roles. Women previously applied but were not hired. the process uses two lasts per machine and a 24 1/2 minute vulcanizing cycle at 300 degrees and under 60 pounds pressure.
