Record York County Election Voter Turnout Shatters All

Thousands of York County voters turned out in record numbers for yesterday's election. Phinney Elected York County Sheriff in Tight Upset

Clinton Wesley Phinney Jr., 22, a Eliot Republican, beat incumbent Richard Dutremble by 157 votes in York County sheriff race prompting a planned recount. Hawes seeks recount in Saco Ward 3 council race

Republican Richard Hawes will request a ballot inspection after a 14 vote margin between Lamontagne and Hawes in Ward 3. If irregularities are found, a full recount could follow, with the inspection overseen by City Clerk Joan LaMontagne and observed by candidates or their representatives. A date is to be set this week after Hawes submits the request and Lamontagne is notified.

Voters flood Ward 3 Saco election for City Council

Voters packed Ward 3 in Saco to cast ballots for city councilor Paul Lamontagne and other listed offices. The surge caused ballots to run out prompting a fresh print run as Biddeford Saco area reported similar turnout. Five charter amendments were approved in Old Orchard Beach, excluding the Public Safety Commission change.

No upsets in area bids for seats at state house

Local representation to the next session of the State Legislature was unaltered by yesterday's election. Half the candidates ran unopposed and the other half easily won their seats. Democrat Peter Danton of Saco heads for a fourth term in the State Senate after his former Saco Republican Mayor Berton Braley in the District 4 race. With 11 of 12 precincts counted, Danton leads Braley 8828 to 7130. Danton's position as assistant minority leader is expected to be unchanged. Republican Elmont S. Tyndale remains in the State House after beating independent M. Abbott Pendergast 3157 to 1584.
