Getaway Route Traced in Maine Murder Trial

Testimony in York County Superior Court continues in the murder trial of Joseph R. Mac Donald of Rochester New Hampshire. He faces charges for the fatal shooting of State Trooper Charles C. Black during the July 9 attempted robbery of the First National Bank of Biddeford branch in South Berwick. Black, Maine’s first trooper killed in the line of duty, was shot five times at close range by a masked gunman. Wayne Beckus of Masontown Pennsylvania was convicted for his part in the death.

Viet Cong Attack Could Hit Dozens More Bases

U S military sources say the Bien Hoa assault could be repeated at a dozen or more South Viet Nam bases. Viet Cong mortars killed four Americans at Bien Hoa and wounded 31, with another American killed later nearby. Tan Son Nhut airbase in Saigon was eyed as a possible next target. The Bien Hoa strike damaged 27 aircraft, including 20 B57 bombers. General Westmoreland ordered tightened security measures.

Fire destroys Staples Block at 275 Main Street Biddeford

Heavy fire damages the Staples Block in Biddeford late Saturday night with losses estimated between 100000 and 200000 as flames reached the third story. The Sand which Shop occupied part of the street level and eight hours of water application followed rekindling Sunday morning. Firefighter Raymond Gagne was treated for smoke inhalation. Cause under investigation by city and state fire officials.
