Width Will Be 8 Lanes
The Maine Turnpike from South Portland to York will be widened from four to eight lanes. Frank A. Howe of the Maine Turnpike Authority says the pay as you go project will finish in eight or nine years funded by toll road income and service area commissions. Traffic is expected to double every eight years with bonds from 1946 mostly paid by 1983 or 1984, after which annual revenue should rise to about $20 million.

Restraining Order Blocks Old Orchard Beach Council
Judge William McCarthy issued a temporary restraining order blocking the town council from closing or finalizing the budget or granting wage or insurance changes to street department workers without contract talks with the union. The order lasts until June 5 pending a preliminary York County hearing. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employes alleges two violations of the Maine Municipal Employes Labor Relations Act relating to a seven percent raise from a prior council and the town's insurance contract. The union seeks damages, while a separate declaratory action questions the insurance program as void and costly for the town.
