Boris Pasternak Nobel laureate and author of Doctor Zhivago died in his sleep at his Peredelkino villa near Moscow after long illness. He faced Soviet criticism after the 1958 Nobel Prize, with the book’s publication barred in the USSR.
Vice President Nixon urged a policy of firmness with the Communists at the SEATO ministers conference, emphasizing restraint to avoid nuclear escalation. Secretary Herter pledged U.S. support for SEATO, as Eisenhower prepared to host a luncheon with allied foreign ministers. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee heard the U2 spy plane inside story from Allen Dulles, with limited access to his prepared remarks.
The Associated Press reports Maine tallies five accidental deaths over Memorial Day weekend. Levi Fournier aged 24 from Eagle Lake died when his car struck an embankment on Route 11. Drownings included Willard Lewis 44 of Boothbay at Black Brook Pond and Airman Jack T Ray 19 of Dow Air Force Base and High Point North Carolina at Brewer Lake Orrington. Other deaths were Stephen McCrillis Portland suffocated in a sand slide and Oiva A Pulkkinen Paris Hill crushed when a car fell from a jack.
A Greyhound bus struck a parked Inter-State Motor Lines trailer truck on U.S. 30 about 28 miles east of Evanston Wyoming. Four women died and more than 20 passengers were injured as the bus plowed into the truck in darkness. One witness recalled a passenger dying in his arms and others screaming. The truck driver had left the cab to help a stalled motorist and another driver slept inside. The bus remained upright after impact.
The body of Stephen Kerrick, 41, of 7 Harvey Street Biddeford, was recovered from the Saco River by Saco Police. Missing since May 25, Kerrick had been a Pepperell Manufacturing employee and recent Togus Veterans Hospital patient on leave. He was married to Lorraine Kerrick and had two sons, Stephen Jr. and Nelson. Police estimate the body was in the river about three days.
The three day Memorial Day period saw traffic deaths rise toward the 371 record set in 1958. Reports continued to arrive as the weekend ended with multiple fatalities from crashes. Four women died in a collision between a Greyhound bus and a semi near Evanson Wyoming Monday night, with at least twenty other bus passengers injured or dead.
Washington analysts view Marshal Malinovsky's Kremlin speech as a blunt warning to keep secret Soviet missile base relocations.
