Nixon Gas Tax Rise Considered

The Nixon administration weighs a four to five cent increase in the federal gasoline tax despite a prior pledge against tax boosts. A one cent rise would yield about $1 billion annually and could help balance the 1974 budget while promoting conservation and mass transit use. Estimated drawbacks include a greater impact on low income households and undecided final amount. Deputy Treasury Secretary William Simon expects a near term decision. Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz notes the president must decide what is best under the circumstances.
