Four Firms To Lease Buildings In Saco Lowell Sites

Community Development president Arthur Maxwell reports negotiations nearly complete to lease space in the former Saco Lowell buildings to four small firms. Three are local, one a newly arrived manufacturing firm. Details remain, but leases should be signed within ten days.

Police Seek Two Escapees From State Reformatory

State Police hunt for Richard Logan 20 of Santa Barbara California and Frank Brady 18 of Portland after they fled the Men’s Reformatory and swam the Presumpscot River following a work party escape. Logan, a former sailor at Brunswick Naval Air Station, is serving one to three years for breaking and entering and larceny. Brady is serving six months to three years for taking a car without permission.

Water Firm Gets OK To Issue Bonds

The Public Utilities commission authorized the Biddeford Saco Water company to issue 1 4 million in bonds to pay off a 1 107 million mortgage due August 1 and repay about 240 thousand in short term loans mainly to local banks. The five percent bond issue is subscribed and placed within the state. Remaining funds after debt payments will go to capital. The company prepared for the sale by issuing 100 thousand in stock last winter, strengthening capital before new debt. Most stockholders and directors are area residents.

Saco Industries To Add Over 1000 Jobs In New Footwear Plant

Treasurer Charles Schulman announced a new Saco footwear operation at Factory Island that will, in full production, employ 400 to 500 workers and contribute to more than 1,000 new jobs in the area. The Allied Saco Footwear Corp also operates Hampshire and Houlton plants, with tax abatements approved. production slated to begin mid July as machinery arrives.

A woman asked a Waterloo Ontario constable to babysit at her home while she went to the police station to pay a parking fine. Police politely declined the request, noting security and policy.

Dulles Leaves Large Estate to Widow in Will

Former secretary of state John Foster Dulles filed his will in Surrogate's Court detailing a substantial estate going to his widow Janet Avery Dulles in trust with income for her then to his daughter Lillias Dulles Henshaw and son John Watson Dulles. He left Ivy bequests and special provision for son Avery Dulles. The willdated July 3 1958 also bequeaths $10,000 to Princeton University.

President Eisenhower will remain in Washington for Memorial Day weekend. In past years he has spent the holiday weekend on his Gettysburg farm in Pennsylvania.

Sampson's Market Hit Again in Elm Street Breakin

Sampson's supermarket on Elm Street, a local break-in record holder, was entered last night when thieves smashed a three by three foot hole in the plate glass door and emptied four unlocked cash registers of mostly quarters and dimes. An adjacent service station was also burglarized with no loot. Police were alerted by a bakery deliveryman and Biddeford officers followed up. The market has seen three break-ins in about a year, including a summer theft of 800 to 1,000 dollars.

Man Rescued From Cesspool At Sweetser Home, Saco

A sanitation worker entered a 12 foot cesspool at 50 Moody Street Sweetser Childrens Home in Saco at 4 30 this morning to clean a plugged sewer. He became trapped but was pulled out before the fire department arrived with no injuries noted. The man remained unidentified.
