Emergency Declared In Strike-Hit Hillsdale Michigan

Gov Romney declared a state of public emergency in Hillsdale after a night of rock throwing by about 300 demonstrators near the Hillsdale jail. The National Guard was ordered in, Essex Wire Co plant shut down except for skeleton crews, and a ban on firearms and on picketing and demonstrations remained in effect as authorities aimed to prevent further violence.

U S and Soviet Sign First Two Nation Consular Pact

Redmond Grid Coach At Biddeford High

David Redmond was elected head football coach at Biddeford High School at a Biddeford Board of Education meeting last night. He will replace Neil Serpico who resigned to pursue a doctorate. Redmond has 16 years teaching experience and will head the physical education department at Sanford High School. Other hires include John Caramichalis as boys physical education instructor and head wrestling coach, Douglas Weeks in the music department, Carolyn Doane as girls physical education, and Trenton Karalekas to middle grades. Transfers were approved by the board.

Beach Tax Hike to 62 Mills for 1964

OLD ORCHARD BEACH Joseph J Mullen chief of the board of assessors announced the personal property tax rate for 1964 will be 62 mills per thousand. Property is now assessed at 100 percent valuation up from 80 percent. Last year’s rate was 72 mills. He said enough taxable property was found to indicate owners would pay about one mill more this year.

AP Book Sale Boosts Biddeford Saco Chest Funds

Following Kennedy assassination coverage, AP published a memorial book sold through AP members. Biddeford Saco Journal handled orders and credited 35 cents per book to the Chest, raising 440.65 to bring yearly total to 31,631.45, 94.3 percent of the 33,534 goal. Publisher W Paul Casavant presented the check to Chest president Donald C Doyle. Clayton W Cammill noted the journal’s support and community impact.
