Budget Talks Shape Maine Budget Fight This Week
The governor said compromise is the session’s aim though lawmakers show little willingness to budge. A $277 million current services budget is in place with a $31 million tax increase and a $40 million extra from Part II plans. GOP aims include a 1 point sales tax rise and a 2 percent corporate income tax. Democrats resist higher sales taxes though, while considering school subsidies, university funding, welfare, and new agencies.
