Lawmakers Debate Budget and Tax Proposals
Smith argued for economy and opposition to a 4 percent sales tax while claiming a plan could cover most of the budget by trimming the supplementary budget, tapping a $3 million revenue gain, using $3 million from surplus, and adding $5 million in fuel and liquor taxes. Rep Jalbert countered that the people do not want cuts to essential services. The Appropriations Committee faced $458 million in proposals with minimal public opposition.
