Denis A. Blais treasurer of the State AFL-CIO Council disputes opponents estimates of a $2 weekly unemployment benefit hike cost. He cites 1958 high claims and argues using a 10 year average to project costs, with Maine weekly benefits averaging $22.34 in 1958 vs national $30.58.
The House approved a Democratic backed 2.1 billion housing bill by 261 to 160, despite GOP efforts to trim it. The vote deepens rift with President Eisenhower over federal housing subsidies and spurs talk of a Senate conference to reconcile differences. The Senate had approved a 2.69 billion program, while the House supported 140,000 new public housing units over four years.
An egg truck owned by Bart Lett Egg District of Georgetown Massachusetts and operated by Kenneth Lee lost its back wheels near Lords Motel on the Portland road in Saco early this morning. Patrolman Benjamin Durant helped Lee place lights around the stranded vehicle. Only a portion of the load was damaged with no other harm reported.

Senator John F. Kennedy criticized James R. Hoffa for threatening a nationwide strike to block labor bills. Kennedy said Hoffa’s remarks misrepresent the union and denied supporting antitrust for unions, noting his own bill contains no such provision while Senator McClellan plans one. Hoffa replied in Minneapolis questioning Kennedy’s regard for workers.

Economist Charles I F Phillips president of Bates College told the 779th District Rotary convention in Maine and parts of eastern Canada that progress should come from lower prices rather than higher wages. He urged unions to use bargaining power to curb inflation by pushing down costs.
Vacation pay checks totaling over 60000 will be mailed today to Sace Lowell employees on layoff with amounts based on May 1953 to May 1959 earnings. Active workers receive usual June checks. In Nebraska, Charles Starkweather, 20, was granted a two week stay of execution to allow an appeal after a writ of habeas corpus was denied. The stay was issued by U.S. Dist. Judge Richard Robinson to June 4.
City crews will prepare Clifford Park for a new children's play area in Biddeford. Two swings two slides and two exercise bars have arrived. The Guadalcanal escort carrier was towed a short distance from Bayonne naval base for scrapping. Navy records list it as the only American vessel to sink an enemy submarine on the high seas during World War II. The German U-boat captured by the ship is preserved as a Chicago museum attraction.
The New York area four Methodist Conferences approve naming a labor and industry chaplain to be employed regionally. Two other conferences in New York and Troy have approved. Newark will consider next month. New York East Conference acted, while the group also recommended conditional recognition of Communist China.

Three youths who kept Cumberland County jail in constant turmoil were sent to the Maine State Prison for safer keeping after escaping a South Wadhren reformatory in Hartford. Raymond Provencher 19 Biddeford Terrence Daniels 20 Augusta and Raymond Beaulieu 18 Augusta were among the escapees. Carroll Cyr 20 Biddeford remained in county jail.
York County Salon 257, Eight and Forty, elected new officers and delegates at its May meeting at Miss Charlene Farnham’s Beach Street home in Saco. New officers include Mrs. Beatrice Wakefield, Mrs. Gilberte Lavoie, Mrs. Martha Whitten, Mrs. Catherine Ambrose, Mrs. Alberta Redmond, and Mrs. Frances Mullins. Delegates to the August 1 departmental marche at the Columbia hotel in Portland were Wakefield, Lavoie, Whitten, Ambrose, and Gertrude Wood, with Emilie Thorner as Pouvoir member and six delegates’ registration paid.
