Shall Council Name Appointees Saco Mayor's Role Is Disputed

The Saco charter debate over mayoral appointment authority continues at a public hearing. Samuel Zaitlin urges the mayor to nominate planning board members subject to council confirmation, arguing that council-only appointments undermine checks and balances. Opponents contend it takes seven votes to appoint. The mayor notes charter guidance from the city solicitor and references to court action. A related ordinance on a board of assessment review prompts a proposed change to require mayoral appointment with council confirmation. No final vote was taken.
