City Budgets Raise Biddeford Tax Rate to 54 Mills

City assessor Arthur Brunelle announced an 11 mill rise in Biddeford’s 1960 tax rate to 54 mills, up from 43 mills last year. Higher costs for a new high school, airport project with federal funds and state match, welfare load, and pay increases for city workers drove the hike. Mayor Clement Deschambault had warned of higher taxes for growth, noting past commitments and declining property valuations.

Breaks At Beach Reported At Old Orchard Beach

Two more attempted house breaks along the same pattern were reported at Old Orchard Beach this month. Police cited a window smashed and left unlatched at Mildred Smith’s home on Bradbury Street with small thefts including change, a carton of Coke, bread, cookies and cheese. An additional break attempt occurred at Mrs. John Neeland’s home on West Grand Avenue.

Kennebunk Sewerage Plant Opens in Ceremony

Official opening of Kennebunk's new sewerage system held today at Water Street and Boothby Road plants. Construction cost totals 921,785.39 funded with Whitman and Howard engineers. Speakers included Charles W. Smith and Dr. Leon Bradley trustees, with Robert Wentworth as master of ceremonies and multiple experts presenting on engineering funding and system construction.

Sniper Sent To Hospital In Mental Observation

Nashville Tennessee 18 year old Howard Criswell was ordered by Judge Homer Weimar sent to Central State Hospital for observation after being bound to the grand jury on nine counts of assault with intent to murder. One of two victims, 36 year old Mike Johns, underwent surgery for a stomach wound from the May 4 attack.

Lamontagne Named Summer Recreation Director in Saco

Harvey W. Lamontagne Jr., 26, of 56 Lincoln Street Saco, was chosen summer recreation director by the Saco Recreation Commission in a unanimous vote. He has served as Recreation center director in winter for five years and is a former golf pro at Willowdale Country Club Scarborough. Howard Jones was appointed assistant director and will work with Lamontagne along with Carol Austin Virginia Allen and John Anagnostis on the summer program.

Plans Named for Biddeford Memorial Day Parade

Robert Norton of the Maine Disabled American Veterans was chosen parade marshal for Biddeford Memorial Day observances. Robert Libby of Biddeford DAV was named chief of staff. Services start at 1 50 p m May 30 at City Square under the Spanish American War veterans group, with Woodlawn cemetery exercises by the local Sons of the Union Veterans camp. Final parade line details to be set at the May 23 meeting.

Kennebunk Recreation Council Formed For Kids

A new Kennebunk Kennebunkport Recreation Council was formed to serve as a clearing house for activities and to assist worthy groups. Representatives from 25 Kennebunk organizations and 12 Kennebunkport groups met at Lower Town Hall to plan for children and youth programs. Appointed were Mrs. Forrest Horne, Mrs. Dorothy Stevens, Mrs. Henry Smith, Mrs. Faith Eckler, Mrs. Bertha Timson, Anceo J. Peterson, Rev. Fred Holmberg, Police Chief Frank Stevens, and John N. Cole, with additional at large members.

Khrushchev Threatens Summit Over U2 Incident

Soviet Premier Khrushchev demanded US apology and punishment for the U2 flight before any summit. He spoke in two interviews and via the Soviet Embassy, while the US signaled a possible move by stating spy flights over the USSR have ceased. He offered to meet with De Gaulle and Macmillan and Eisenhower only if the US publicly condemns the incursions and promises nonrepetition.

The Associated Press reports New Orleans schools must desegregate by September as a sixth anniversary marks the landmark ruling. York County Women’s Christian Temperance Union elected officers during an all day session at the Kennebunk Baptist church. New officers include Mrs. Carl Humphrey treasurer Mrs. Ralph A Hatch corresponding secretary Mrs. Homer Chappell re elected president Miss Mary Worthley field secretary and Mrs. William G Munster vice president. Speakers Mrs. T Roy Jarrett national WCTU official and Mrs. Benjamin Sweet Maine WCTU president urged action against underage drinking and bootlegging. Rev. Benjamin Bubar Jr. spoke on rising bootlegging. Over 40 members attended.

Woman Rushed To Hospital After Suspected Suicide Attempt

Old Orchard Beach police rushed Mrs. Rose Higgins, about 65, from Westland Avenue to Webber Hospital in a police cruiser after she allegedly tried to end her life by using a plastic bag. She remained unconscious, stomach pumped as a precaution, with four bottles of sleeping pills found nearby. no motive yet disclosed.
