Elephants Race Marks Whacky College Derby

Orange County State College staged the first intercollegiate elephant race drawing 10 000 spectators on a 252 acre campus. A 5 1 2 ton elephant named Kim ney from Long Beach State College won the heavyweights race in a chaotic run that bowled over cameramen and students. All results were unofficial with trophies awarded for quirky traits.

Webber Hospital Starts Nurses Aide Training for Local Women

A dozen Biddeford Saco women begin an eight week nurses aide program at Webber Hospital funded by Area Redevelopment Administration. The 10 hours of classroom and 30 hours of clinical work weekly run five days a week under instructors Mignonne Lamb and Louise Smith with Annie Mae MacEachen supervising. Trainees will earn 22 dollars weekly while training and may receive certificates upon completion with no obligation to remain with the hospital.

Test Pilot Reports Mysterious Objects Seen Near Flight

Test pilot Joe Walker said film from the X15 flight to 246000 feet showed five or six mysterious objects. Astronaut John Glenn and Soviet Gherman Titov had previously reported strange sightings in orbit. Walker cautioned he could not identify the objects and noted they appeared disc or cylindrical in shape. Glenn questioned if the objects were snowflakes or vapor crystals, stating some appeared to move toward him. Titov noted additional observations during his orbital flight.
