Saco School Committee Meeting Set for Tonight at 7 30

The Journal corrects that the Saco school committee meeting will occur tonight at 7:30 in the office of schools located at 34 Spring Street. The earlier note of Monday night was in error.

Foxcroft students win respite in hair standoff

Two Foxcroft Academy sophomores were allowed to play on the tennis team under a temporary restraining order after refusing to cut their hair. The ACLU sued on grounds the grooming rule infringes personal liberty and discriminates against boys. The case continues pending a fall hearing.

Democrats get break on bill for Maine convention

Augusta City Council deducted 250 from its bill to the Democratic State Committee after complaints by Bever ly Bustin and Robert Frates that promised services were not delivered. Frates said Chamber of Commerce volunteers failed on hotel and delegate registrations though the rental for the Civic Center was 1400 before the adjustment, with total convention costs likely around 20 000.

Saco Bicycle Rodeo Set With Prizes And Community Help

On May 22 at Burns Pool in Saco the bicycle rodeo will host 800 riders for scavenger hunts films and the safety test run by Youth Aid Officer David Corbett. Mr Wheelie and the Talking Bicycle will attend along with Elks food support and local sponsors. Top three scorers win 10 speed bikes and extra points for best decorated bike. Registration costs 25 cents per bike and is required by city ordinance.

Four area men indicted by York County Grand Jury

The York County Grand Jury returned 36 indictments including four against area men for indecent liberties and a 19 year old Biddeford driver charged with reckless homicide. Joseph P. Cote faces the homicide count after a December crash in Biddeford that killed Judi Genimatas. Other defendants include Orman Derry, Charles Goudreau, Raymond Bolduc, Robert Bernier, Raymond Gaudette Jr., Jeanette Haynes and others on charges of burglary larceny receiving stolen goods and related counts in Biddeford Saco Old Orchard Beach and nearby towns.

Saco approves numerous April building permits listing numerous applicants

Building Inspector Alexander Perham issued April permits for many Saco residents and firms. Projects include single family dwellings for Frank and Lucy Dumas at Woodside Acres and Kennebec York Corp. on Buxton Road, pools for James Keithley and several others, accessory structures for Vernard Marston and Universal Design, demolitions, porches, garages, and interior alterations with values ranging from $350 to $65,000.

Faculty openings at OOB after year end departures

Old Orchard Beach schools will lose five faculty members when the term ends in June. Retiring teachers include Clarice Weld after 16 years, a high school English teacher after 20 years, Loyola Celley after 18 years, and Susan Varney who has taught fifth grade for four years. Carol Robeson resigns after five years to move out of state. The committee will interview candidates for these vacancies and a new high school special education position.

Final Bicentennial Wagon Train Leaves Maine for Valley Forge

The last segment of a bicentennial wagon train, with participants from all 50 states, departs Augusta for Valley Forge Pennsylvania to celebrate the United States 200th birthday. Wagonmaster Roger W Morse says horses people and supplies will stop overnight in Winthrop and continue south Wednesday. The Maine train closes the program departures for Pennsylvania sponsors who assembled a wagon from each state plus regional wagons and chuck wagons. The project expects 100 wagons and about 1000 horsemen at Valley Forge by July Fourth.

Emery backs bill to abolish federal agencies

Maine Republican Rep. David Emery joined over 70 colleagues in cosponsoring a plan to abolish 11 federal regulatory agencies within three years unless saved by Congress. Agencies named include the Federal Maritime Commission FDA and Interstate Commerce Commission. The measure argues agencies harm public interests and must prove their value or be eliminated.

Saco Firm Seeks DEP Air Emission License

Allied Chemical Coatings Inc of Saco applied for an air emission license from the Department of Environmental Protection to operate a boiler at its Factory Island plant. DEP officials call the filing routine and say findings will be prepared for the Board of Environmental Protection after review.

Lorraine Patch of Lebanon was elected president of the York County Municipal Clerks Association at Henri's Restaurant. Joan M. Lamontagne of Saco was re elected vice president and Dorothy Hilton of South Berwick secretary treasurer. Clerks from Alfred Hollis Kennebunk Lebanon Lyman North Berwick Saco Sanford South Berwick and Wells attended. Inez Elliott of Lyman received a retirement gift and previously served as association vice president in 1975. The group discussed the New England City and Town Clerks Association conference planned for Maine next year.
