Triton completes world submerged voyage and Eisenhower honors captain
The nuclear powered submarine Triton finished an 84 day 36000 mile submerged circumnavigation tracing Magellan route. Captain Edward L. Beach received the Medal of Merit from President Eisenhower after docking off the Delaware coast. The voyage set endurance records but did not exceed Sea Wolf’s 60 day submerged run. In Moscow the Soviet Union protested U2 spy flights while Khrushchev warned of retaliation against foreign bases and future missions.
