King Urges Nonviolent Fight for Civil Rights at Local Symposium

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King spoke to an overflow crowd at St. Francis College urging nonviolence as the weapon for civil rights. He noted progress over 25 to 30 years, cited segregation's decline, and warned against attempts to suppress voting and equality. Crash probe widens as FBI investigates loaded pistol found

Saco businessmen elect officers at annual meeting

Donald C. Doyle was elected president of the Saco Businessmen's Association at the annual meeting held last night in the Saco Municipal Court Room. Clifford A. Purvis was named vice president Israel A. Rosen treasurer and Robert J. Fenderson secretary. The board includes Richard Brady Roland Vincent Richard G. Harmon John G. Janson Lester H. Austin Nicholas P. Scontras and Robert Butler. Scontras was thanked for long service and prior roles. Parking meters in the business district were discussed and tabled for study.

Saco Tannery Union Drive Targeted by NLRB Action

The Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union pledges not to use the unfair labor practices charge in efforts to organize Saco Tannery workers. A May 18 Boston meeting will be attended by labor and management, with a June 15 hearing on the Hubert Jr. discharge to proceed.

Dale Hansen Chooses West Point Appointment

Dale Hansen a Thornton Academy senior has received a principal appointment to West Point Military Academy from the Adjutant General of the Army on Senator Margaret Chase Smith’s recommendation. He will report July 1 and is son of Mrs. Clarke W. Hansen and the late Ralph F.E. Hansen of Heath Read, Saco. He is editor of the Tripod, National Honor Society member, class officer, Student Council, winter track, Marooner staff, and Latin and Junto club member.

Johnson Urges Racial Justice on Southern Tour

Biddeford PTA installs new officers and summer workshop set

The Biddeford Parent-Teacher Association at Biddeford Junior High School installed a new officer slate led by president Robert Hodge with William McKenney as vice president and Mrs. Allen Sakalas as corresponding secretary. A summer workshop is planned for Aug 8-9 at the University of Maine Orono. The first September meeting shifts to Sept 17.
