Connally Makes Bold Switch to Republican Party
Washington reports John Bowden Connally, longtime Democrat and Texas leader, has defected to the GOP. Authorities speculate he may be asked to fill a White House aide vacancy or join the Cabinet as Nixon reshapes relations with key figures like Haldeman and Ehrlichman. Connally, praised for charm and drive, has built a career from Floresville farmer to Treasury secretary and Texas governor, now aligning with Nixon while denying immediate office plans.
