Biddeford Woman Has Church Post

A Lewiston clergyman and a Topsham woman were elected to office at Tuesday’s session of the state Congregational Christian conference. The Rev. William Flynn was named president of the Maine Congregational Ministerial Relief Society, and Mrs. Eugene P Wakeley was elected president of the Congregational Christian churches of Maine. Other officers include Mrs. Donald Webber of Auburn as first vice president, Mrs. William Thompson of Portland as corresponding secretary, and Mrs. Chris Johnson of Biddeford as treasurer.

Restaurant In Rumford Destroyed In Fire

A two story building housing Freddie's Lunch in Rumford suffered total loss as a fire destroyed the restaurant and damaged adjacent units. Firefighters prevented spread while residents were evacuated as the cause remained undetermined and losses were put at 45,000 to 100,000 dollars depending on the estimate.

Boston Grand Jury Probes $9.6 Million Garage Scheme

Suffolk County grand jury investigates finances of the Boston Common underground garage built and run by the Massachusetts Parking Authority. Vice Chairman Joseph W. Hadassah Officers Elected in Biddeford Saco Chapter

Mrs Samuel Karlin was re elected president of the Biddeford Saco chapter of Hadassah at Etz Chaim synagogue. Officiating officers re elected included Mrs Philip Sneider first vice president Mrs Irving Remar second vice president Mrs Arnold Shapiro recording secretary Mrs Paul Lerman treasurer and Mrs Frederick Small corresponding secretary. Newly appointed was Mrs Edward Carp financial secretary. Installation set for June 19 at the annual donors event.

Nine Year Old Girl Left Without Family

Margaret Elizabeth Smith, 9, is the sole survivor of a Texas family of six after a Galveston Bay boat tragedy that claimed her parents, two brothers, and a sister. Only she and Raymond Henry, 30, survived. Searchers found three children and two adults missing. Relatives from Amarillo, Dallas, and Hurst visited as authorities consider guardianship for the girl.
