Biddeford's Nick the shoemaker retires after 58 years
Nick Karvonides, an 85 year old Biddeford shoemaker for almost six decades, has closed his Franklin Street shop after years of break ins and dwindling business. He recalls learning the trade in Russia in 1910, escaping the Turkish draft in 1913, and marrying his Greek bride before returning to the old country. The shop now sits empty with unclaimed shoes and old equipment as he retires from shoe repair work.
