NH Textile Union May Stage Strike
Somersworth New Hampshire union workers at the Great Falls Bleachery and Dye Works voted 117 to 3 to strike on April 1 if a new contract is not agreed. They seek a 10 cent hourly wage increase to about $1.35, a seventh paid holiday, a third week of vacation after 15 years, better insurance, paid funeral leave and union dues check off. One Dead Five Hurt In Grace Liner Crash
The Grace liner Santa Rosa carrying 247 passengers and 265 crew collided with the empty oil tanker Valdem off Atlantic City at 3 0 am. One tanker crewman died and five were injured while no passengers aboard the cruise ship were harmed. A fire broke in the forward paint room but was contained with effort. The Santa Rosa proceeded toward New York with possible transfer plans to Santa Clara. The Valdem was disabled and towed to safety as Coast Guard noted the bow breached the tanker’s engine room near the stern.

Over 130 people attended a joint service club dinner at Pepperell hall to raise funds for Carol Manning. The Rotary Kiwanis and Lions clubs of Biddeford-Saco sponsored the event to buy braces for the teenager injured in a fall auto accident last autumn. Manning, who turned 18 yesterday, received birthday wishes as her father William Manning attended. A birthday tape and cake will be sent to Thayer hospital in Waterville where she is under treatment.

Washington AP reports a new four in one vaccine covering polio diphtheria whooping cough and tetanus will be marketed soon. Public Health Service spokesman said it has been approved for use with licensing granted to Merck Sharpe Dohme of Philadelphia and Parke Davis Co of Detroit to manufacture and sell it. The serum targets primarily children and will be administered in a series of shots.
