A young Japanese stabs United States Ambassador Edwin Reischauer in the right thigh. Medical officials report the wound serious but not critical. The incident unfolds amid broader reports of Soviet influence in Cuba and regional tensions.
President Johnson told a labor convention that a general war is impossible in the nuclear era and nations should pursue reasoned agreement over aggression. He cited Cyprus and Panama Canal talks as hopes for settlements and noted Cuba was calmed by altering water supply rather than Marines.
