Spokane police pursue a maniac after Candy Rogers a nine year old Camp Fire girl is found slain. Police Chief Clifford Payne vows full force effort as investigators say the victim was abducted on a street corner raped strangled with her own slip and buried in a brush pile miles from town within hours.
A 230 officer Spokane police mobilize after a fourth grader disappears March 6 while selling Campfire mints near her home. Six mint boxes found near a bridge. 750 tips from citizens and unusual witnesses fail to solve the case as volunteers scour the canyon and river. Three searchers in an Air Force helicopter die in a crash during the manhunt. Continued on page two.
In Saco Municipal Court William F. Wilson Jr sentenced two local youths to York county jail terms on petty larceny charges for stealing 200 pounds of copper wire from Everett Huston. Morin 18 of Biddeford got 90 days while Gilbert Lavigne 17 of Saco got 30 days. A 15 year old Biddeford youth involved was found guilty. Wilson noted prior offenses. Lavigne cited probation history. Morin had prior probation twice and served at the State School for Boys. In separate action Raymond Boisvert 65 Biddeford drew 11 months for assault and battery but jail term suspended on $25 fine. Wentworth 23 Kennebunk Beach paid $25 for speeding 40 mph. Dupuis 47 Hartford Conn. fined $20 for Maine Turnpike speeding. Bulmer 38 Greenville paid $10 for running red light.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff offices at the Pentagon undergo a third reconstruction in 12 years under the Defense Reorganization Act. The work, totaling about 350 900 dollars, includes carpentry electrical plumbing and new furnishings for expanded staff quarters.
State Police report eight men believed killed after a coal mine explosion at the Brimstone mine near Robbins in Scott County. Rescuers have not yet reached the miners. Robbins lies about 75 miles northwest of Knoxville.
Early returns show the Progressive Senegalese Union led by Leopold Senghor poised to control the Legislative Assembly after an election in which one person died and a score were injured. The UPS, pro-French, is expected to form the government in Dakar, Senegal.
President Eisenhower and a group of governors met at the White House to discuss broadening state unemployment compensation laws or risk federal standards. Key aides and cabinet members attended as the White House conference planned to extend discussions into the afternoon.
Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan propose a three point approach to a summit with Khrushchev. A Gen eva foreign ministers meeting by May 11 would set German issues and wider topics, with heads of state meeting only when warranted and ministers deciding timing and agenda for the summit.
Debra Suntheimer who has cancer celebrated her fifth birthday in Braintree Massachusetts with friends and family. Doctors at Children’s Medical Center removed a cancerous kidney tumor last December and later found cancer cells in her bloodstream. Her parents are George and Mrs Suntheimer. she has three sisters Terry Denise Linda and a brother Larry.
Bonn report says Felix von Eckardt, a top adviser to Chancellor Adenauer, endured a mild heart attack. In Algiers French forces report 1444 Algerian nationalists killed captured or defected over the weekend. Geneva talks see Poland and the Soviet Union pressing the Inter-Parliamentary union.
Nehru said fighting in Lhasa has subsided with no Indian plan to intervene in Tibet. He noted uncertainty over the Dalai Lama's fate as reports say he is under house arrest. Peiping ordered the Chinese governor to persuade the Dalai Lama to withdraw support from rebels. Tibetan protests followed calls for the Lama to attend a Chinese reception. Fighting eased near the consulate after demonstrations and looting.

In Rumford Maine Superior Court Judge Delahanty said he will rule by May 3 on Paul N Dwyers bid for a new trial in the 1937 murder of Dr James G Littlefield and the 1937 killing noted in the case Dwyer contends he was railroaded into taking the blame. The hearing featured Dwyer his Portland counsel Herbert H Bennett and Attorney General Frank E Hancock with testimony focusing on alleged trial flaws and state witnesses who have since died.
Eight year old Julia Ellis whose leg was amputated Saturday night by a surgeon using a borrowed penknife, remained in critical condition in a Kirkwood hospital. Her nine year old sister Donna, recovering from leg fractures, was also hospitalized after being struck by a car near Arnold Missouri. State police charged driver Robert E. Kemp with careless and reckless driving while drunk.
In Raleigh North Carolina negotiations shift to Governor Luther Hodges office as he convenes company and Textile Workers Union of America amid the four month old Harriet Henderson Cotton Mill strike. Hodges offers no definite proposals and aims to discuss settlement. Disputes include arbitration clause renewal and seniority rights for workers since February reopening amid episodes of violence.
