Out-of-state tuitions on UM trustees' agenda
University of Maine trustees take up proposed tuition hikes on Wednesday with the plan from Chancellor Patrick E. McCarthy calling for annual increases of 200 dollars for out-of-state undergraduates and graduates and 500 dollars for out-of-state law students. In-state students would see smaller raises and fees would rise from 25 to 30 dollars per credit hour for part time and continuing education. Traffic accidents claim 2 lives in Maine week end
Two people died in Maine highway crashes this weekend. Michael Morrison, 22, of Pownal, died when his westbound car struck tree stumps in WorthYarmouth on the Royal Road. Steven Albert, 20, of Somersworth NH, died when his car skidded on ice on Maine 9 in Berwick and overturned near Noble High School. A 20 year old New Brunswick woman, Carla Turner of Carlingford, remained in fair condition after being struck on Main Street in Fort Fairfield and two female friends had minor injuries. The driver of the striking vehicle was charged with driving under the influence. the charge will be filed in Presque Isle District Court.

Woodsmen vote to sever union ties in Maine
The Maine Woodsmen's Association voted to sever ties with the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners ABL-CIO and keep Wayne Birmingham as president. Only 29 of 1,200 members attended the Sun Falls meeting in Bangor. Birmingham, who led last fall's work stoppage by pulpwood cutters and truckers, said he erred in pursuing carpenters' affiliation.

Two Cars Stolen In Old Orchard Beach Chase
Two car thefts occurred Sunday in Old Orchard Beach with one high speed chase. Barbara McVicar reported a Volkswagen stolen at 4 10 p m. A 19 year old man and a 15 year old juvenile were arrested for larceny of a motor vehicle. In the second theft Michael Ruess reported a 1973 Chevrolet station wagon stolen at 10 20 p m. Gary Carmichael was charged and held overnight awaiting court.
