Rise of the film editor in Hollywood
S Porter and D W Griffith edited their films but handed editing to their cameraman as the craft grew. The 1920s saw editors emerge with talkies advancing the role. Today 1600 editors belong to Hollywoods Film Editors Union and 280 to American Cinema Editors. An editor can improve films by masking flaws in acting, directing and story. Elmo Williams tightened the action in High Noon, illustrating editor power. There is tension with directors who distrust editors and prefer supervising cuts themselves.
