White House mission leaves Vietnam with 12 coffins

The White House commission led by Leonard Woodcock departed Vietnam today carrying 12 flag draped coffins of U.S. airmen aboard a C141. In Vientiane the delegation was welcomed by officials at a dinner and dance while the group pledged further searches for the 2,550 U.S. service members still missing in Indochina.

Chief Lumb stays in post as resignation bid falters

Chief Richard Lumb remains police chief of Old Orchard Beach after he apologized to the public safety commission and asked withdrawal of his March 5 resignation to stay in the top job. The meeting saw Commissioner Louis DeAngelis move to approve the resignation letter and request a patrolman.

Two PSC members questioned over dual roles in Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach three residents face possible PSC violations but only two were acted on. Commissioner Louis DeAngelis tied Paul Fontaine’s dual roles on the PSC and as a deputy sheriff paid by the town to a potential breach. Fontaine refused to step down from either post during the meeting.

Bootlegger busted in Biddeford booze pursuit

In spring 1889 Biddeford, Marshal Tarbox pursued liquor smugglers Joseph Pelopyn and William Bisson. A chase along Alfred Road ended when Pelopyn was captured and jailed after a half barrel of beer and two kegs were found in a buggy. Bisson fled. Tarbox later sought him, fining Pelopyn $50 and six months' costs.

Cruising the Bars in Old Orchard Beach

In Old Orchard Beach residents and visitors fill Friday evenings as bars open to unwind after a tough week. By about 9 p.m. Old Orchard Street will crowd with traffic and people. The Whitehall the Tidal Basin the Old Whaler the Bikini Tavern and the Sandbar cater to regulars and newcomers with distinct atmospheres.

Sullivan the Sandbar mainstay of Old Orchard Beach

In Old Orchard Beach, James Sullivan known as Sully, a 32 year old Sandbar bartender, is the social hub and local guide for the bar’s Friday crowd. Regulars include Daniel Guarino and Charlene Delaney, with town officials Bruce and Dick Marshall present. The Sandbar hosts a band, wide screen television, and a casual mixed-age clientele in a smoke filled, social Friday night setting.

Kennebunk Me election polls open early for town vote
