Overseas Trade Agency Sought to Boost Maine Economy
Development Commissioner Lloyd Allen urged creating a Division of Foreign Trade within Maine’s Department of Economic Development with a $150,000 two year budget and one new in state position to help small industries grow overseas. The plan would use consulting firms with overseas offices rather than new in state offices. The Maine Port Authority supported the measure and Rep Louis Jalbert called it generally agreeable. A second bill seeks foreign trade zones enabling duty free raw materials and parts, with tariffs paid on finished products upon export. Rep Edwin Maddox said the zones could be a key industrial tool. Fernald noted Maine’s ability to attract foreign trade driven industry is strong.
