Maine House Defeats Civic Group Tax Plan
The Maine House voted 89 to 49 to indefinitely postpone a bill allowing municipalities to levy taxes on civic and fraternal organizations for public safety, road, and sewer services. The measure, sent to the Senate, faced opposition over potential discrimination and impact on veteran groups, while supporters argued local communities should decide. Other actions included university funding discussions and an extension for school budget adoption deadlines.

State senator offers $25 to alma mater amid UMaine aid fight
State Sen. Hayes E. Gahagan of Caribou told UMaine officials he could not vote for higher taxes to fund the seven campus system but would contribute $25 of his own money. Chancellor McCarthy framed the request as part of a broader appeal for state aid, while Gov Longley warned of veto. The hearing drew about 400 protesters and a slim chance for the entire $6.4 million package as officials note a 10 percent aid cut and morale issues without raises.
