Erosion Relief Sought For Camp Ellis In Saco

Urgent erosion relief for Camp Ellis is being pursued by the U S Army Corps of Engineers and local and state officials. A rapid soil erosion survey offshore and inshore will begin within a week, with a Coast Guard helicopter photographing the site. If temporary measures prove feasible, state Civil Defense and National Guard action may follow, while long term plans seek to prevent jetty flanking and advance dredging to widen the channel and beaches near Camp Ellis.

In Arundel a town meeting on Monday March 3 opened after 1 p.m. due to a snowstorm and pending permission from the Maine Municipal Association. The session was recessed to March 10 with voters to return to decide on a School Committee member and warrant articles. Town Clerk Mrs Ali S Leach said the incident would be discussed with Town Counsel Thomas Regan while a spokesman for the Association confirmed lengthy talks with Selectman Ralph Harris, who was unavailable for comment.

Water Delivered To Trapped Miner In Utah Mine

Rescue workers drilled 35 feet to reach Willam Buck Jones a miner trapped nearly five days in a zinc lead mine in Lark Utah. They delivered two once shots of water and planned to bring food soon bullion eggnog coffee and cereal. Jones described his enclosure and used a wooden pick handle to prop up the ceiling as rescuers provided light and water.

Maine Corridor To Canada Proposed

The Maine Senate asked for a $30 million bond to rebuild Route 6 and shift it toward a Maine corridor highway from Vanceboro to Coburn Gore near the Quebec border. Sen. Wakine G. Tanous proposed the route run Vanceboro through Lincoln, Howland, Milo, Dover-Foxcroft, Guilford, Bingham to Coburn Gore. Route 6, about 200 miles, is a two lane corridor road not an expressway. The bill heads to the Highways Committee for a hearing on a date to be set. A separate measure would seek a $213,000 bond for Sanford facility improvements for handicapped children.

Local Bus Fares Rise Five Cents in Maine

Ricard Stride, president of the Biddeford Saco Bus Co., announces a five cent fare increase citing higher operating costs. The Maine Public Utilities Commission, in August, voiced no objections to the raise, and his company was the last in Maine to implement such a hike.

Beach Program Recertified in Old Orchard Beach

The Department of Housing and Urban Development recertified Old Orchard Beach's Community Improvement Program for two years, enabling urban renewal and public housing activities. The town must maintain code enforcement, set long term goals, and submit code amendments with adoption evidence at the next submission. A mid-term progress review will occur about one year after certification.
