Van Rie Motion Denied In Murder Trial

Boston AP Judge Frank J. Murray denied three defense motions for directed verdicts of acquittal in the Willem Van Rie murder case. Prosecution alleges Van Rie beat and drowned Lynn Kauffman after forcing her through a porthole aboard the Utrecht near Sept 18. Jury, all male, awaited final arguments and charge. Van Rie may address jurors before deliberations.

Biddeford Approves 600000 School Bond At Special Meeting

The Biddeford city council approved a 600000 general obligation bond to finance a new high school at Main and Highland streets. The loan will be for 20 years with annual repayments and bids from about 175 banks or bonding houses will determine interest rates. Grading and site services will begin within 60 days after Lucien Bourque contract approval, enabling construction to progress toward state accreditation for the new school alongside Gould Academy and Sanford High School as Maine’s accredited institutions.
