Maine Budget Battle Faces Afternoon Votes and Referendum Risk

The Maine legislature delayed the budget fight into the afternoon as compromise proposals surfaced but no agreement emerged. The House again rejected all previously killed tax bills, while leadership signaled possible amendments to the large $240 million appropriation bill and a 5 percent sales tax hike to fund the budget. Governor Curtis and Democrats oppose the sales tax rise, and lawmakers weigh alternative plans including a two cent cigarette increase and a new income tax on intangible property.

Senate Drops Plan for New Maine Highway Headquarters

In Augusta the Senate backed a conference committee's move to drop a $2.5 million Highway Department headquarters from the state budget after a referendum rejection. The bill would have earmarked about $49 million first year and nearly $50 million second year, about $15 million by bond. The chamber cleared the highway appropriations, approving toll removal on two bridges, a $3 million Route 6 bond from Sandy Bay to Vanceboro, and studies for an east-west highway and a Bath to Phippsburg bridge.
