Insecticide Blamed For Rhine Pollution
Dutch scientists blame an insecticide from the chloride carbohydrate group for killing millions of Rhine fish and threatening water supplies in Dutch and German cities. West German officials question the origin while tracing dead fish along a 185 mile stretch from Bingen to Amsterdam and warning residents to avoid the river. Clean water checks and potential switch to auxiliary supplies are in place as authorities close canal locks and deploy trout as poison detectors. The poison entered near Bingen to St Goarshausen, possibly dumped from a ship.
