About 350 people toured the Mile stone Foundation in Old Orchard Beach to honor the organization's second anniversary. Explorers Say Polar Bears Are Dangerous

Four British explorers led by Wally Herbert returned to Portsmouth aboard Endurance after 477 days crossing 3,620 miles of Arctic ice. They described polar bears as a major threat, recounting bears boarding their camp, eating rubber boots, and ignoring warning shots. They battled temperatures to 45 below zero and built igloos, calling the journey a form of horizontal Everest.

Pentagon to cut Army strength and draft 29500 in August

The Pentagon announced plans to draft 29 500 men in August and to reduce Army strength by 13 000 as part of Nixon’s Vietnam withdrawal. About 8 000 soldiers leaving Vietnam will not be replaced, and 5 000 more will depart as their terms expire, leaving total Army strength just over 1.5 million and saving about 130 million dollars. First 15 000 returnees include the 9th Infantry Division battalion to Ft Lewis with a July 8 ship date and early discharge processing.

Maine Canoeists Near Canadian Border in Maine's North

Three of the four canoeists Dan Ahern Richard Suzor and Dave Shoby paddling toward the Plains of Abraham near Quebec City are now 22 miles from the Canadian border in Stratton Maine. Ahern says they are tired bug bitten and ahead of schedule at about 22 miles per day with two days left to reach the border. The group rests at Cathedral Pines Camping area after crossing Flag Staff Pond Carry Ponds and facing insect portage challenges.

Clearwater Sails to Kennebunk for Open Folk Festival

The sloop Clearwater arrives in Kennebunk on June 29 with Folk singer Pete Seeger and the Hudson River Sloop Singers aboard. A 7:30 concert at the Franciscan Monastery grounds follows an all-day open festival from 1 to 6 pm with an audience sing, poetry readings, and a fundraiser for the Hudson River Sloop Restoration.
