Navy Dedication of 70 Million Polaris Station In Maine
CUTLER Maine Navy officials dedicated a 70 million dollar radio station and communications center for the Polaris submarine network. The vast very low frequency transmitter, the world’s most powerful, will link with submarines in the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Arctic, with engineers saying contact can be made globally. The facility sits on a Machias Bay peninsula, easternmost in the United States, and features a 2 million watt output. In Jerusalem Eichmann claimed he saved 20,000 Jews by diverting them to Lodz, Poland, arguing his superiors ordered extermination elsewhere and that he only arranged transport to the death camps. He testified that fate of those 20,000 was chosen by him and not sent east where he knew extermination occurred.

Stevenson Scores Some Points on South American Tour
Washington reports that Adlai E Stevenson’s 16500 mile swing through South America boosted the Kennedy administration’s priority on hemi spheric issues and highlighted the alliance for progress. AUGUSTA In the rush to adjournment the 100th Legislature approved a bill raising educational subsidies to towns and cities by 1,268,000 but failed to attach an appropriations clause. The House Appropriations Committee backed President Kennedy’s enhanced defense budget at 42.7 billion dollars for the next fiscal year, funding Polaris submarines, bombers, missiles, and larger armed forces. A technical cut hides a net reduction of 6.2 million from the President’s request, while the plan remains 2.4 billion above the current year. The panel warned of a worsening world situation and said U.S. military strength stays ahead of the Soviet Union.

Castro Rejects Offer in Tractor Swap Deal
Prime Minister Fidel Castro rejected the Tractor for Freedom Committee’s latest deal. He said he would send a delegation of captured rebels to the United States to explain his position to the American public. Castro accused the committee of lying and trying to confuse public opinion. The committee had set a noon deadline and offered to exchange prisoners for 500 tractors, mostly farm bulldozers, with refunds to donors if the deal failed. Castro had demanded 1,000 tractors instead of 500 and had previously proposed exchanging captives for bulldozers.
