Farm Bill Death Shocks President

President Kennedy’s farm bill was defeated 215 to 205 in the House on Thursday night, shocking administration leaders who expected a win. The White House warned the loss would raise next year’s taxes by about $1 billion and worsen the already large surplus, while the American Farm Bureau called it a victory for farmers, consumers, and taxpayers. The Senate had passed a similar bill, but House action appeared unlikely amid committee divisions and signals that the Senate measure would not reach the floor. The vote exposed party tensions as 48 Democrats joined 167 Republicans against sending the bill back to committee.
