Swift Approval Seen For Jap Treaty

The Senate eyed swift approval of the 10 year security pact with Japan after a long debate ended with plans to vote. Leaders projected 8 to 12 opposition votes while a two thirds majority was needed. The treaty, replacing the 1951 pact, grants Japan status as an allied partner and outlines mutual defense and consultation on force deployments. President Eisenhower would sign after ratification, with documents exchanged in Hawaii. Hirohito sealed the agreement as Kishi’s cabinet approved, ending Japan’s postwar restraints and outlining base rights and veto limitations for the United States.
