Maine crime report shows arrests and costs across six months
Maine Law Enforcement Planning and Assistance Agency released the first comprehensive six month crime report for July to December 1974. It shows 17 000 arrests with about a third of juveniles, $5.7 million in property losses of which $2.3 million was recovered, 1 200 cars stolen with 95 percent recovered, and 7 000 burglaries plus 11 000 larcenies. Police say marijuana arrests dominate drug charges, while alcohol and driving offenses remain heavy, and only about 20 percent of offenses lead to arrests. The report highlights gaps in disposition data and questions the effectiveness of the criminal justice process in Maine.
