West Berlin tunnel escape saves East Germans from border guards

A West Berlin student led four East Germans through a 9 foot tunnel under the Berlin Wall to safety, amid gunfire from Red border guards who killed one of their own. Nine others were pursued, five captured. The group included women and children, with rescuers aiding through a rope hoisted stretchers.

Rodney W. Ross aged 56 defeated his older brother Milan to win the Republican nomination for state representative, capturing 666 votes to 238. Old Orchard Beach Establishes Urban Renewal Authority

Old Orchard Beach voters approve creation of an urban renewal authority by 524 to 240 in a special referendum. The move was backed by the town chamber of commerce and planning board, making the town the first in the area to form such an authority.

York county voters approved a 1.5 million educational television referendum 8,106 to 5,883 with several towns voting against. In Biddeford Saco area Biddeford favored FTV 2,348 to 1,415 and Saco approved ETV 685 to 668. Statewide tally stood 32,984 to 26,272.

Explosion Injures Two on Sanford Tar Truck

A State Highway Department tar truck exploded in a sand pit near Sanford injuring two workers. Verne L. Rendell of Berwick, 57, suffered a probable fractured skull and serious injuries, while Donald Smith, 30, of York, had shoulder and back injuries. Rendell was critically hurt. Smith was in good condition. Foreman Joseph La Fortune cited undetermined cause. The 1,400 gallon tank was mostly empty. Fire crews controlled a tar residue fire quickly.

Tiros V, the fifth weather eye satellite, was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard a three stage Thor Delta rocket at 7 18 a m to study hurricane origins and storm evolution. The satellite transmitted its first cloud cover pictures two hours after orbit insertion and orbits now monitor tropical storms near the Caribbean and Atlantic while aiding weather forecasting centers in Miami New Orleans and San Juan.

Parents Create Arabian Night At Glen Rock High

Glen Rock New Jersey parents staged a surprise graduation ball for 174 graduates. They converted the high school auditorium into an Arabian courtyard with minarets, a fountain, live trees, and a fortune telling booth. Harry James and his band provided music. The all‑night event included lamb kebab supper, breakfast at 3 a.m., an early pool swim, and tiny Arabian sword favors. Cost was 15 per pupil, totaling 2,610 for band, decorations, supper and prizes.

Storms Strip Wide Area From Texas To Great Lakes

Violent storms battered a broad swath from Texas to the Great Lakes with tornadoes in the St. Louis area, damaging winds and large hail. The weather produced heat waves in the West and East, with temperatures near 90s and 96 at Indianapolis and 95 in Chicago. A teenage girl was killed in Indiana by a lightning strike, and another died from a live wire downed by winds. Drive in theaters and a drive in restaurant were damaged, while highways buckled and traffic clogged. Several trailer homes overturned near Wichita Falls, Texas.
