Chris Marco, a 17 year old Morse High senior from Bath, won the Maine Schoolboy golf title at Augusta Country Club with a 149 after an 80 on the back nine and a 69 Monday. Tracy Trott finished second at 150, with Jon Seavey third at 151 and Bruce Samaklis tied for fourth at 154. Sixteen qualifiers began play for the Maine junior championship, with six advancing to the New Englands on August 28 at Oak Hill.

At Pilgrim Lanes Haverhill MA the Cape Ann Open Mixed team posted 1501 to win the World Candlepin Championship in the 12 string event. Tony Guilbeau led all players with 405 in three strings, followed by Dolores Norsigian 377 Don Riley 374 and Judy Fern 350 for the winning quartet. Maine East-West finished second at 1478 as Western Maine bowlers Ann Hubert Pat Tarbox and Dick O'Brien posted strong scores. Beverly Massachusetts Mixed team claimed third with 1470 led by Bob Shepard 439 Linda Mercaldi 347 Mike Reilley 344 and Linda Dunn 340.
