Gartley seeks lesson from light Maine primary turnout
In Augusta, Secretary of State Mark Gartley cites unusually low turnout as evidence of a dysfunctional campaigning system. He notes 40.4 percent of enrolled Democrats in Maine's 1st District voted in the seven way Democratic primary, while Barton won the nomination with 9 732 votes. The GOP senate race drew 77 520 votes with Monks winning 83.7 percent. A statewide Bigelow Mountain preserve referendum drew 166 833 votes. Gartley argues shorter, more intense campaigns may boost participation and runoff rules may be needed to resolve crowded races.

Salmon fry die after hatchery power outage in Maine
One third of Maine's newly hatched landlocked salmon at the Grand Lake Stream Hatchery died after a power outage shut a water pump. About 160000 fry, hatched in April and measuring one to one and a half inches, suffocated as fresh oxygen supply failed during the storm. The hatchery did have a backup generator, but the failure wasn't discovered until after losses occurred.
