Maine exports a furry fisher to Vermont and Nova Scotia to curb porcupine damage. Research chief Kenneth Hodgdon says the fisher can kill porcupines without being harmed by quills, and its appetite helps reduce bark stripping and gnawing. Since 1960 Maine has shipped 123 fishers to Vermont and 79 to Nova Scotia, with porcupine decline noted in both regions. The fisher population has moved south from northern Maine, where few were trapped annually before 1960.
Laura Barr Lougee, 54, retired director of exhibits at Cranbrook Institute of Science, keeps a pet tarantula in a glass cage. She describes spiders as dangerous yet fascinating, recounts multiple spider anecdotes, and notes her art uses web designs. Her tarantulas come via a Portland importer from South America.

Richard Lewin of Kennebunk has purchased the Glen Mor Restaurant site on Portland Street and overseen extensive renovations. The project will house three barbers: owner Dic Lewin, Bruce Eldridge, and Lawrence Stetson.
