Leadbelly film review evokes legend over man
Gordon Parks and Ernest Kinoy craft a stylized portrait of Leadbelly through broad incident and dreamlike images. Roger E Mosley’s muscled performance aims for heroism while the film’s realism and pacing clash with Leadbelly’s violent life and the music, which feels separate from the on screen story. The Texas shoot location and two striking sequences linger, but the treatment remains controversial and the PG rating reflects stylized violence.
