The House Republican and Democratic leaders meet to map strategy on the energy bill starting Monday with focus on the 23 cent gasoline tax. GOP critics say the tax would raise prices, while Democrats call that a distortion of Ford administration plans.
In Sacramento the jury after five days of deliberations will read back more testimony today in the murder trial of Symbionese Liberation Army members Russell Little and Joseph Remiro. Judge Elvin Sheehy sent the jurors to their hotel after a request for the record of testimony. In New York, 71-year-old Silverio Mazzella repelled a knife attack by kicking the assailant in the groin and boxing him to the ground before returning to a senior center he had been visiting.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH The school committee will seek $10,000 less in local tax money this year after changes in the school funding law. Superintendent Lawrence Bernard said higher than expected state subsidies allow revisions to cover Loranger School roof repairs, including a $50,000 job, yet the total remains $1.4 million. The committee will meet the town council Thursday at Loranger School to discuss the news. They plan to move or repurpose the Titcomb Farm office site as the public safety complex develops. Allied Engineering has drafted concept designs for a new school to be shown in June, with state funding sought in July. If plans and land purchases proceed, the town may be reimbursed for part of the site costs.
