Inflation Overpowers Bonds in Eroding Real Returns
A panel of 67 leading economists urges Congress to raise the 5.1 percent rate ceiling on government bonds as inflation erodes real returns. The piece notes that Series E bonds yield little in early years while inflation cuts into gains, and compares bonds unfavorably with savings accounts, stocks, mutual funds, and real estate. It also highlights payroll deduction plans and past shifts in savings behavior, plus Treasury borrowing constraints pushing rates short term.
