Emile Rieve, the first ident of the Textile Workers Union of America, is honored as President Emeritus for life with a yearly honorarium. He may attend all TWUA conventions and executive council meetings but cannot vote.
At Biddeford High School the Class of 1960 received awards for excellence in academics sports and leadership during a noon senior assembly. Principal Raymond Kenneally presided with many seniors named for specific honors including Richard Hevey John Hill Deborah Fournier Richard Friary Donna Emmons Catherine Hoyt Shirley Randall Carol Deinstadt Virginia Sherwood Jeannette Guay and others noted for achievements across science business Latin math and editorial fields.
Westbrook AP The D. Warren Co may move expansion plans or relocate if forced to stop dumping wastes into the Presumpscot River. Rudolph Greep, mill manager, denounces costly sewer line or treatment plant fixes as prohibitive. Warren plans a $9 million expansion, pending river conditions.

In Tokyo a 34 hour protest by about 5 000 students surrounded Parliament. Rock throwing and club wielding police clashed with demonstrators as they demanded removal of Prime Minister Kishi and protested Eisenhower’s forthcoming visit and the security pact extending U S bases in Japan. No shots fired and few injuries reported.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev blasted President Eisenhower as lacking will power and warned against Nixon as a working partner for the United States. He mocked Eisenhower’s leadership, praised his Dulles era, and said Nixon could lead the U.S. into a new war while outlining a new disarmament program.
Khrushchev warned that host nations of US bases would be targeted first if war breaks out as the Soviet Union presses for liquidation of overseas bases. He said rocket commanders have authority to launch nuclear strikes from bases and questioned the new disarmament plan with added provisions for delivery systems.
A helicopter plucked 9 year old Walter Sector from the wreckage area 390 miles northwest of Winnipeg after 15 days spent in fear in the bush. Rescue crews later retrieved the father and a friend’s bodies. Walter, exhausted and malnourished, reached Flint Flon Hospital in good condition.
Michigan Governor G Mennen Williams backs Senator John F Kennedy, shifting 51 delegate votes toward Kennedy. Rockefeller heads farm belt tour for John E Davis as Nixon and Stevenson remain noncommittal amid jockeying by Humprey Symington Brown and others in the Democratic and Republican contests.
The Manpower Conference in Biddeford promotes Operation Scouting to boost adult interest. Speakers include Bernard F. Brady and Maurice Roux, with Admiral Herbert Knowles urging more district committee members. York district covers 1,939 boys in 21 Cub Packs 26 Boy Scout Troops and two Explorer Posts sponsored by local groups.
Thornton Academy held an awards assembly with Headmaster Robert Bowie and faculty presenting academic and sports honors. Recipients included Peter Gordon Norman Bowie and Robert Bailey for National Forensic League excellence and multiple Bates College and University of Maine recognitions.
Kenneth Earnest, 22, a professional snake handler from Buena Park, is home after being bitten by a tiger snake on May 17. He spent 10 days in an iron lung and underwent multiple blood transfusions with five doctors treating him at Los Angeles General Hospital. He began breathing on his own four days before returning to his Buena Park home with his parents, hoping not to be bitten again.
Explorer Scout Donald A. Foster, 16, of Northfield Maine, earned Scouting's life saving medal after pulling his father from icy Bog Lake. The ceremony was at the National Scout Council's 50th annual meeting with Harry M. Addinsell presenting the honor.
