President Ford and Anwar Sadat wrap summit in Austria and pledge a peace formula within a month while Sadat agrees to consult with Cairo. Israel’s Rabin announces major military withdrawals near the Suez Canal as a peace gesture and ships resume.
About 25 gay activists from Maine and New Hampshire staged a peaceful three hour demonstration at the Wells Town Hall organized by SAGA to press for public awareness of gay rights. The protest followed the Wells Board of Selectmen denial of malt liquor and amusement licenses to The Stage Door bar. Police limited disruption. one sign was confiscated for lack of a permit. Demonstrators also picketed Valerie’s Restaurant in Ogunquit.
In Salzburg President Ford tripped on a rain slicked step at the airport. White House aides say a chronic football knee affected his balance while a knee supporter aided mobility. Ford told Chancellor Kreisky he was uninjured and joked about the fall.
The United States and Thailand announce the impending pullout of the B52 bombers and F111s from Thai bases. By month end about 4,500 of 23,000 U.S. personnel are to depart, with Ubon Air Base set to close as Bangkok seeks closer ties with Vietnam.

London AP reports Libya signed an accord with the Soviet Union to establish an atomic center in the Arab republic for peaceful purposes. The center will include a 10 megawatt reactor. the Soviets will train Libyans to operate it under international safeguards. The deal follows a large arms agreement that provoked Egypt's President Sadat and amid broader Arab tensions edge toward potential conflict in the region.
