An unwilling Miccosukee candidate told court bailiff Bob Barron he lacks citizenship papers. Barron ordered Douglas M. Osceola of the Everglades to jury service, noting that his Miccosukee nation has never accepted U S citizenship offered to Indians in 1912.
Sen. John F. Kennedy works to unite factions and strengthen paths to New York and California as he plans a briefing from Tom Mboya on Africa. He watches the Republican convention and aims for a single command campaign through the DNC, with Citizens for Kennedy offering independent voice.
A group of Republican governors failed to sway Governor Nelson Rockefeller to accept the vice presidential nomination. Rockefeller reaffirmed his stance and pressed for a stronger civil rights plank and defense policy while Nixon supported the current platform. Governor Mark Hatfield led the bid, but Rockefeller called the decision irrevocable.

In Orland a station wagon crash after a reckless speed bet left William J. French fined $300 for driving while intoxicated. Lambert and two others escaped with minor injuries as car struck rock, signpost, and power pole then slid into a ditch.
Vice President Richard Nixon said he worked through the night to push a strong civil rights plank into the Republican platform. He held a telephone conference with Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and met with state delegations at the GOP convention in Chicago. Nixon noted progress and planned further talks with platform committee members as he pursues the issue amid Southern delegates opposition.
The S. D. Warren Co. reports 1960 first-half earnings up 12 percent to 2.858 million or 1.33 a share, with sales up 8 percent to 48.742 million. President George Olmsted cites major planned investment in Cumberland Mills research facilities and notes Cumberland plant conversion from soda to kraft process as a constructive forward step.
The Lipman Poultry Co. received its first grain shipment via a full water route from the Midwest. Using three leased barges, the Agnes Connors carried 2,500 tons of corn from Toledo to New York and up the Kennebec River, cutting costs to $5–$7 per ton versus $11.40 by rail. Lipman plans to expand waterfront storage to about 3,500 tons.
In Portland AP Maremont Automotive asks the U S District Court to make Saco-Lowell a plaintiff rather than co defendant in an anti trust suit alleging an intent to monopolize muffler sales. The government says Maremont aims to shut Saco-Lowell's Saco plant.
